1.0 Background
DTMF stands for Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency. That is, a DTMF signal is one that consists of only the sum of two pure sinusoids at valid frequencies. In DTMF, the tone ’8′ is represented with the sum of 852 Hz and 1477 Hz sinusoids. We understand that the energy of the sinusoids present in the generated tone should exceed the energy present at any other frequencies by 30dB. Also, notice that the DTMF frequencies are effectively divided into two subsets. One contains the lower four frequencies, and the other contains the upper four. Each DTMF tone is defined by the presence of exactly one of the frequencies from each of those subsets. [1]
1.1 OBJECTIVES
The DTMF remote controlled system is a compact and rugged remote control unit, designed for interface with a standard cellular mobile telephone handset. It plugs into the “hands free” adaptor socket on the telephone handset, and operates by receiving DTMF tones from the phone audio output. It is mains powered by electricity, and provides three contact closures capable of switching mains voltages. By setting the handset to auto-answer, remote control is possible at any location with cellular coverage, and from any telephone in the world with tone-dialing capability.[2,3]
1.2 TECHNOLOGY APPLIED
The technology applied involve GSM, DTMF decoder and embedded system technology.
GSM is acronym which stand for global system for mobile phone technology is employed because through it and the telecommunication company is one the means of achieving the gateway.
DTMF decoder Touch-tone is familiar to many (telephone), it is a mature technology, and readily available with off-the-shelf, single-chip, low-cost components. For these reasons DTMF is often used in remote control applications that typically use telephones (e.g. accessing your messages from an answering machine, retrieving your account balance info from your bank’s database).
Embedded system technology is the technology which involve the programming of the microcontroller.[5]
1.3 APPLICATION
This project can be applied in various area to enhance the technology behind an exiting system. The areas of application are listed as follows:
wireless home gargets system.
Remote car demobilizer.
Wireless security and hazard systems[6]
2.0 POWER SUPPLY UNIT (PSU)
The power supply unit consists of a 12V/500mA step down transformer, a bridge rectifier, 1000µf/35V capacitor, 7805 voltage regulator, status indicator LED; a 1K resistor limits the voltage entering the LED. The 240V/50Hz input supply into the transformer, passes through the rectifier which converts it to a d.c. voltage. Smoothening the d.c. is carried out by the capacitor. The 7805 regulates the voltage to give a voltage of 5Vdc required as VCC. This Vcc is delivered to various loads that needs the supply .The characteristics of the power supply unit and distribution of the d.c. voltage to various parts of the system have some effects on the performance of the circuit.
The essential features of the power supply unit include;
-isolation of the a.c. mains supply
-regulation of output voltage.
-stability[7,8]
D.C. voltage is isolated from the mains by the transformer. From the rating, it steps down 240v input to 12v before delivering to the out put of the bridge rectifier. The rectifier circuit consists of four diodes configured into a full-wave bridge rectifier mode.
The regulator used in this design provides regulated and stable d.c .voltage (5v+/_0.1%)
And these outputs drive all chips use d for this design. The capacitor is designed to filter and remove surges that appear on either the input or output of the supply.[9,10]
2.2 Filter Section
Separation of the low-group and high group tones is achieved by applying the DTMF signal to the inputs of two sixth-order switched capacitor band pass filters, the bandwidths of which correspond to the low and high group frequencies. The filter section also incorporates notches at 350 and 440 Hz for exceptional dial tone rejection. Each filter output is followed by a single order switched capacitor filter section which smoothes the signals prior to limiting. Limiting is performed by high-gain comparators which are provided with hysteresis to prevent detection of unwanted low-level signals
2.3 Steering Circuit
Before registration of a decoded tone pair, the receiver checks for a valid signal duration (referred to as character recognition condition). This check is performed by an external RC time constant driven by ESt. Logic high on ESt causes v c (see Figure 4) to rise as the capacitor discharges. Provided signal condition is maintained (ESt remains high) for the validation period (tGTP ), vc reaches the threshold (VTSt ) of the steering logic to register the tone pair, latching its corresponding 4-bit code into the output latch. At this point the GT output is activated and drives vc to VDD. GT continues to drive high as long as ESt remains high. Finally, after a short delay to allow the output latch to settle, the delayed steering output flag (StD) goes high, signaling that a received tone pair has been registered. The contents of the output latch are made available on the 4-bit output bus by raising the three state control input (TOE) to a logic high. The steering circuit works in reverse to validate the inter-digit pause between signals. Thus, as well as rejecting signals too short to be considered valid, the receiver will tolerate signal interruptions (dropout) too short to be considered a valid pause. This facility, together with the capability of selecting the steering time constants externally, allows the designer to tailor performance to meet a wide variety of system requirements.
3.0 Guard Time Adjustment
In many situations not requiring selection of tone duration and interdigital pause, the simple steering circuit shown in Figure 4 is applicable. Component values are chosen according to the formula:

tID =tDA +tGTA
The value of tDP is a device parameter (see Figure 11) and tREC is the minimum signal duration to be recognized by the receiver. A value for C of 0.1 µF is recommended for most applications, leaving R to be selected by the designer.
Different steering arrangements may be used to select independently the guard times for tone present (tGTP ) and tone absent (tGTA ). This may be necessary to meet system specifications which place both accept and reject limits on both tone duration and inter-digital pause. Guard time adjustment also allows the designer to tailor system parameters such as talk off and noise immunity. Increasing tREC improves talk-off performance since it reduces the probability that tones simulated by speech will maintain signal condition long enough to be registered. Alternatively, a relatively short tREC with a long tDO would be appropriate for extremely noisy environments where fast acquisition time and immunity to tone drop-outs are required. Design information for guard time adjustment is shown in Figure 6.
3.1 Power-down and Inhibit Mode
A logic high applied to pin 6 (PWDN) will power down the device to minimize the power consumption in a standby mode. It stops the oscillator and the functions of the filters.
Inhibit mode is enabled by a logic high input to the pin 5 (INH). It inhibits the detection of tones representing characters A, B, C, and D. The output code will remain the same as the previous detected code[14]
3.2 Differential Input Configuration
The input arrangement of the MT8870D provides a differential-input operational amplifier as well as a bias source (VRef ) which is used to bias the inputs at mid-rail. Provision is made for connection of a feedback resistor to the op-amp output (GS) for adjustment of gain. In a single-ended configuration, the input pins are connected as shown in Figure 10 with the Op-amp connected for unity gain and VRef biasing the input at 1/2 VDD.
3.3 Crystal Oscillator
The internal clock circuit is completed with the addition of an external 3.579545 MHz crystal and is normally connected as shown in Figure 10 (Single-Ended Input Configuration).[17]
3.4 Relay Driver
A relay driver output is simply a “pull down transistor” or “open collector” output. It can connect to a Power Flash and 6315 with ease, connects to most security systems without much difficulty, but it may not work (directly) for connecting with a garage door opener and other devices requiring a “contact closure” input. In this design, we employed the BC 337 transistor circuit analysis
The complete circuit consists of the power supply unit, the DTMF decoding stage and micro-controlled relay switching sections .The power supply as already analyzed supplies the DTMF decoder. Having chosen the MT8870D DTMF decoder, considerations must be given to some factors which enable this chip function effectively especially as designed. It is seen that the DTMF tones from the mobile phone (GSM) is coupled through a transformer. This ensures electrical isolation between the phone line and the rest of the circuit. It equally steps up the signal to an appreciable level enough to bias the differential input of the decoder (though the decoder is highly sensitive).Careful measurements of the DTMF signal output level of different NOKIA phones revealed that the audio output level is relative to the different phone models. Taking NOKIA 2300 as an instance, 5mV was obtained as its audio output level as compared to 2.3mV in NOKIA 2600. Thus, the addition of a transformer coupling circuit is relevant to step-up the signal to an appreciable level.The signal obtained from the secondary section of the transformer which was enough to bias the differential input of the Op-Amp integrated inside the DTMF decoder The Op-Amp is biased at mid-rail. Thus the reverence voltage at the inverting input is 1/2VDD Vref = ½ * 5 = 2.5v
Gain of the Op-Amp When using NOKIA 2300, the gain of the Op-Amp is obtained as follows:
Vin = 5mV
R1 = 10k ohm
Rf = 100k ohm
Gain Av = Rf/R1 = 100/10 = 10.
And Vo = ViAv = 5 * 10-3 * 10 = 50mV

From the above calculation, it implies that before a tone could be registered as a valid DTMF tone it must have a tone duration of 33ms and inter digital pause of approximately 26ms.
3.5 DATA ANALYSIS
The data analysis was carried out with proteus virtual laboratory. I setup a virtual scenario whereby all the components required to carry out my data analysis like the GSM, DTMF decoder and microcontroller was present. With this setup I was able to get my data for subsequent processing.
3.6 THE DATA IMPLEMENTATION
The electronic system data involve the dual tone multi frequency (DTMF), GSM phone, microcontroller as well as others necessary component which is virtually applied to the system in Proteus software after careful manipulation of the data by the written instruction programs burned into the controller gave a predicted output
4.0 SYSTEM TESTING
After system design on the computer with proteus software whereby the necessary component been an integral part of the electronic system thereafter the control program was down loaded into the microcontroller then I now start it with the start button the output display confirmed the system workability.
4.1 SOFTWARE SYSTEM TESTING
After writing the control program on the notepad using assembly language instruction set of 8051 family, the program was debugged, assembled and converted to hex file which is the processor working code before it was down loaded into the processor. The output response on the display confirmed the software workability.
4.3.1 cONCLUSION AND Recommendations
We assume these recommendations are among the most noteworthy, mostly because they are mentioned in our sources. It took us a while to decide what the each of the recommendations mean. Any frequency within 1.5% of the DTMF frequency should be detected. Frequencies with 3.5% error should never be detected. Inside the 1.5% – 3.5% range is a don’t care. DTMF signals lasting 40ms should always be detected. Signals less than 23ms should never be detected.

Non-Operation: 23ms min
Signal Interruption: 10ms max
Twist: Normal: 8db max
Reverse: 4db max
Inside the 23ms-40ms range is a don’t care. DTMF signals that are interrupted for 10ms or less should not detect two separate signals. Twist is caused by a non-uniform power loss across the frequency spectrum. Normal twist is when low frequency power is greater than high frequency. Reverse twist is obviously the reverse condition. The detector must be reject 8db and 4db for normal and reverse twist respectively.
We have not found any DSP DTMF implementations that are able to meet these specifications. Some algorithms come much closer than others, but none meet the specifications completely.
